The history

The mill that gave the house its name

Beside the house, along the stream, stand the ruins of the old mill that once belonged to this land.

It no longer operates, but its stone walls remain a quiet trace of the property’s past, still visible from the garden.

It stood on the bank of the Ereño (Errekalde) stream, beside the farmhouse of the same name. Its first recorded owner appears in the 1745 tax census, and it’s mentioned again in the 1810 territorial survey it ceased operating in the mid 20th century.

What remains today are traces of the dam, the millrace, the head pond, and the mill building itself. Gautegiz Arteaga had no ironworks of its own, though foundry remains have been found nearby.

Old records write the name as “Oxangoitia” the historic spelling of what’s now “Ojangoiti.” Spanish orthography merged that old “x” sound into “j” sometime between the 19th and 20th centuries, and Basque spelling itself wasn’t standardized until the 1970s likely why the name shifted along with it.

"Simply magnificent! A true delight to stay here. It really is as luxurious as it looks in the photos. Every room is beautifully designed and has plenty of space. Jaso is a true superhost who leaves thoughtful food gifts, like local wine and fruit, to welcome us, plus useful tips on places to visit and eat. And of course, she replied quickly whenever we had a question. We especially loved having 2 living areas, one on each floor, ideal for 2 families totaling 8 people like us (a TV area and a games area). It’s on the edge of the forest, just a 2 km walk from the Santimamiñe Caves (book tickets ahead) and the Oma Painted Forest. Nearby there’s a charming restaurant, ‘Lezika’, which was welcoming and served tasty food. A wonderful week where the day-trip highlights were San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the incredible Gernika Peace Museum (10 minutes by car), and a day in Bilbao including the Guggenheim. There are also great swimming beaches at Laga and Lekeitio, where you can walk to the island at low tide."

"We stayed here this past weekend and the experience was unbeatable. The house is spotless: everything brand new, very clean, and at a perfect temperature. The bedrooms are huge and the beds, with new mattresses, are extremely comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you could need, and you can feel the care in every detail: toiletries, tableware, and all kinds of comforts that make the stay very pleasant. It’s just outside a small village, surrounded by nature, which brings a lovely peace for unwinding. Communication with the host was excellent, always attentive and kind. We would 100% recommend this house."

"Our host Jasone is fantastic. She helped a lot with advice even before we arrived, and a kind note and many other thoughtful touches awaited us at check-in. The house sits at the edge of a forest, yet we found it easily. We spent a week in a spacious, comfortable, well-equipped house, completely satisfied. Everyone loved the beds. Thanks to Jasone’s care, we felt completely at home. Gernika is a few minutes away, with everything available there. Bilbao is 20–30 minutes by car. For anyone craving quiet in a forest setting, perhaps with the sight of grazing deer, I highly recommend this stay."

"We had the most incredible stay! Nestled amongst nature, this house is spacious, clean, newly renovated and beautifully decorated. Jasone was very accommodating with checkin/out, went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and gave great recommendations. All of the bedrooms are large and comfortable, and the house has plenty of space to relax alone or hang out together. We loved waking up in the rural setting and dining outside. Thank you for the stay xx"

"Lovingly renovated, tastefully decorated, very well equipped, exceptionally clean and beautifully prepared - that’s how we found Jaso’s house. She even thought of small details like laundry detergent, dishwasher tablets, Nespresso pods, cookies... We would rent the house again anytime, and we enjoyed our stay there even in bad weather. There’s plenty of space. As a host, Jaso is hard to beat. Very helpful and kind. Thank you, Jaso."

"Jaso treated us wonderfully from the first moment, helping with any questions and being warm. The house is newly renovated, very pretty, and perfect for enjoying peace and quiet. It has shutters to keep it dark at night, perfect pillows, perfectly made beds, a fully equipped kitchen, we used the barbecue… A dream spot, very peaceful, no noise, lovely to be by the river. Everything wonderful and highly recommended 100%."
